What is Art-Based Counselling/Psychotherapy?

At Therapy Avenue, we offer creative counselling sessions that gently guide you to the heart of your experiences in a transformative yet supportive way.

Art therapy is a powerful, evidence-based approach that combines traditional talk therapy with art-making to help process emotions, reduce stress, and explore personal challenges. It is particularly effective for managing anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, and life transitions.

What Happens in an Art Therapy Session?
Each session is tailored to the individual’s needs. Sessions typically begin with a conversation to explore what’s on your mind, followed by guided art-making using materials such as watercolours, pastels, ink, or pencil on paper. No artistic skill is required—this is about self-expression, not creating a masterpiece. As you engage with the creative process, new insights and emotions can emerge, helping you process thoughts and feelings in a way that words alone sometimes cannot.

Our approach is trauma-informed, neurodiversity-affirming, and backed by psychological research. As a registered Psychotherapist with the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia, with experience in grief support and life transitions, our practice provides a safe, nurturing space where you can explore, heal, and reconnect with yourself.
